Practical steps for building supply chain water resilience

This guide provides a pragmatic approach to addressing water-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities (DIROs) in agricultural supply chains, based on the common elements and insights of effective practices and programs currently being implemented by leading companies and nonprofit groups.

The approach outlines four practical steps: Assess-Prioritize-Commit-Act, with accompanying key outputs, implementation tips & tricks and supporting references.

These steps are intended to:

  • build on and complement existing disclosure frameworks (e.g., the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS)), and relevant action frameworks
  • be applicable to companies of all sizes and maturity levels, and in all relevant industries with agricultural supply chains,
  • provide flexible (nonmandatory) activities to consider and tailor to the individual needs of the company and context, and
  • build confidence and facilitate learning by doing to accelerate action.
